Catholic primary schools in the Diocese of Ballarat have School Advisory Councils. The term ‘School Advisory Council’ encompasses school committees that cover the purpose of a School Advisory Council, but may have a different name such as School Education Committee/Council, School Community Committee or School Council.
Under Canon and civil law, the Canonical Administrator is the legitimate authority in a Parish and the Council acts an advisory body to him and those delegated by him in all matters. Councils support the Canonical Administrator and Principal in the directions/policies of the school.
Decision making in School Advisory Councils takes into account scripture, traditions, church teachings, liturgy and ritual. Decision-making processes draw on consensus.
